Well having got off to a chilly start with our snowiest March ever, it looks like Spring is finally starting to win the battle!
However, not everyone is unhappy with the wintry weather, the Canadian Geese, having usually departed for home by now, have decided to extend their stay with us as they’re enjoying the colder weather so much. As the Geese are getting ready to leave us for their Summer breeding and feeding grounds, we’re looking forward to welcoming back the the Swallows from Africa in late April. They use the same nest year after year which speeds up their breeding cycle. As for those mad March hares…they really are crazy! The snow couldn’t dampen their spirits, they could still be seen boxing away in the snowy fields. Quite the sight! Some more signs we’ve spotted that spring has sprung are the Otters making their dens along the river bank and the miniature Shetlands shedding their winter coats. Perhaps most excitingly for us, the ex battery hens are laying again, a good indication the days are getting longer. These eggs are available to buy in our shop in reception. These hens are also the girls we hire out with their coops for your very own fresh eggs daily, just outside your door!
The weather hasn’t stopped us either, we’ve been super busy here making some exciting and we’re sure, welcome changes. Preparing the site for what we hope will be a (mostly) warm and dry season – well we can but hope!! But fear not campers, if the weather should let us down, and I’ll be honest it has in the past…we’ve got you covered! Our new for 2018 all weather pitches will keep your tents clean and dry whilst causing no damage to your tent. Let’s make putting up/taking down tents on a muddy pitch one less thing for you to worry about. Next on the list campers, cooking in the rain…well we’ve made that one less thing to fret over too. Brand new for 2018 is the Camp Kitchen! A haven from the rain, a clean, dry space that all campers are welcome to cook and eat in and will no doubt be especially popular when too wet or cold to do so outside. Coming to you later in the season is a brand new shower block, the building of which is well underway. Due to popular demand over half of the pitches on site are now fully serviced, camping has never been so comfortable! Good news for the mini campers too, we have just installed a brand new kids play area complete with rubber chippings, fencing and a gate. We have spent the last few days planting bare root hedging plants (some 1500!!) around all the new pitches and site boundaries which will help soften the site outlook, give each pitch some protection once fully established and privacy for all.
Perhaps our proudest moment of the year so far though has come in the shape of our Gold Award for caravan storage from CaSSOA. We are thrilled to be able to offer caravanners the use of our gold accredited facility, with CCTV and alarms, where not only do you have the peace of mind that your caravan is safe and secure but also waiting for you at an idyllic location whenever you wish to use it!
The clocks have gone forward and the days are longer and brighter, perfect for exploring the rambling hedgerows of West Dorset which are springing back to life. The winding lanes will soon be lined with swathes of frothy white cow parsley and pink red campion. Look closely and you may even spot orchids in the verges alongside the roads. So as we march fully into spring and we welcome back all the beautiful wildlife and plants, we also look forward to welcoming each and every one of you to The Dorset Hideaway, see you on site soon!
